Wong Sun Tat was born in Beijing in 1975. He migrated to Hong Kong at the age of two and started learning piano when he was four years old. At the age of five, he began his erhu studies with his father, Wong On Yuen. By the time he was seven, he had already performed as a soloist in Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan and was also a frequently invited guest at radio stations. He was hailed by the media as a "whiz kid" and as the youngest contestant in 1984 who won the first prize in the Hong Kong Schools Music Competitition Erhu Open Category. In May that year, he performed with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra in a concert entitled Chinese Music Concerti Selections and in August, he enrolled into the junior school of the Hong Kong Academy of Performance Arts.

In 1986, Wong won a special prize in the Sichuan Children's International Contest. In 1987, he gained entry into the Secondary School affiliated to the China Central Conservatory of Music under the tutelage of Nie Jing Yu, Zhang Shao, Zhang Yu Ming, An Ru Li, Zhao Han Yang, Li Heng and Liu Chang Fu. In 1989, he won the third prize in the Second ART Cup Chinese Instruments Competition Erhu Youth Category. In 1990, he joined his father in Hong Kong in a father-and-son erhu recital which was well received. He recorded his first solo album in 1991. In 1992, he held three concerts with his father at the Chinese Culture Centre in New York. In the same year, he also performed at the Arts Festival in Macau.

In 1993, Wong entered the China Central Conservatory of Music to continue his studies at tertiary level. In November of the same year, he gave his debut recital at the Beijing Concert Hall. In May 1994, he won the Second Prize in the Erhu Concerto Competition in Taipei. He participated in the same competition in May 1997 and won the third prize. In July 1994, Wong won the Central Conservatory of Music Fu Cheng Xian Memorial Scholarship Second Prize. In 1996, he was awarded a second prize under the China People's Scholarships Scheme and received the first scholarship ever presented by the Ethnomusical Foundation in the United States.

Wong staged two recitals in Hong Kong in August 1995 and January 1997. He is currently a musician and Deputy Sectional Principal with the Singapore Chinese Orchestra.
